WEEK ONE

Started my blog, learned about WordPress and how to use it, launched my blog. On the first day, I used the given writing prompt for my blog post. It felt fitting.

Become Self-Employed: Day One

Daily writing prompt

What’s the biggest risk you’d like to take — but haven’t been able to?

After going through college and working multiple different jobs that I thought could be careers, I have confirmed that the only way to maintain my mental health is to not have a job. Because of this realization, throughout the next few months I am going to do everything I can to become a freelance writer. This seems like the most accessible way to make money while not being employed by anybody. I’ve always been confident in my writing skills, but when it comes to doing it for money I am a complete beginner. I plan to teach myself and practice many different blogging tactics as well as SEO optimization and other tools to help get eyes on the things I write. I have never even considered being freelance to be a possibility to me because the thought of having no reliable income is terrifying to me. Not to mention, there will be a long period when I first start where I will not even come close to making any money. While I am still in my mid-twenties, I am both scared and excited to take this chance on myself to achieve some sense of salvation. If you want to follow my progress, I am starting my blog today, the day I am writing this post. Go to dailycontentwriter.com to read about my journey on a daily basis.

Day Two

Today I am attempting to get as comfortable as I can using the blogging and website building software. Progress is slow, but slightly noticeable. I have been able to update the “about” section of my website from the default to the most bare-bones description about what this site is. Learning everything that I need to in order to be successful in this endeavor is still overwhelming, which was expected on day two and most likely throughout the rest of the month. It is important for me to remember that. Once I become confident in my ability to make the changes I need to in this site, that is when my focus will shift towards a more SEO and marketed approach. Hopefully this will be sooner rather than later but based on my progress today, I will be planning on later. Still holding out hope that once this feels like more of a routine, the progress will begin to grow at a bit of a faster rate.

Day Three

Still noodling around with the blog software today. Posting daily is making me more comfortable with that but there is still lots to learn. Another thing I am trying to do today is looking around at other successful blogs and keeping track of what they have that makes them look more professional and presentable. One thing I learned is that the content of the blog has to be tailored, or niche. Obviously, this one does not have a lot of structure, which was never the intention in starting this. This blog is more so to keep track of my progress and hold myself accountable. I was always planning on starting multiple blogs, I am simply using this one to get my feet wet so that when I do come around to creating more marketable content in my areas of “expertise”, it will come off as much more polished.

Day four

Watched a couple videos on using word press today which gave me a much needed new perspective on how to use it. I was unaware of how important it is to stick to a selected theme when posting your content. While this feels as though it limits my creative freedom in what my blog will look like, I definitely do not want to learn the amount of coding it takes to freely design and organize a website. I can also understand the benefit of focusing directly on the content that I plan to put out, and having that organized for me already. I chose a new theme to work off of that is a bit simpler than my original choice and it is already going much better. Will continue to use this software very loosely but going forward, I am going to try to research and use SEO knowledge in the content that I put out.

Note – I am going to take a couple days off starting tomorrow due to my aunt getting married. Don’t miss me too much!
